History of Serving Mosman

balmoral beach, mosman

At the 2008 Mosman local government election the community voted for changes that would come into effect at the 2012 election - to abolish the ward system, to popularly elect the Mayor and reduce the number of Councillors from nine to seven.

This was the trigger for community members to approach Peter Abelson asking him to seek re-election to Council. Peter Abelson has previously been a highly respected Mayor and Councillor on Mosman Council.

Consequently in 2011 Serving Mosman was born. A legacy of Peter Abelson’s tenure in public office, the Serving Mosman team stood on a platform to improve service, accountability, consultation and courtesy, as many in the community thought Council was underperforming and had become overly bureaucratic.

Sworn in as Mosman’s first popularly elected Mayor, Peter’s leadership led to positive changes being implemented immediately, including making the council more customer-focused and service-orientated, tightening governance structures and improving all levels of communication.

During this term, we were proud to lead the successful fight to keep Mosman independent and save Mosman from forced amalgamation. Led by Carolyn Corrigan as the President of Save Our Councils Coalition, and Tom Sherlock, both representatives on Council, the campaign had strong community support, with Council also funding the legal fight.

Leading the Serving Mosman team campaign in 2017, Carolyn was appointed Mosman's first popularly elected female Mayor with the strong support and endorsement of Peter Abelson.

Re-elected Mayor in 2021, along with the appointment of Serving Mosman's Michael Randall, Pip Friedrich and Sarah Hughes as fellow Councillors, now Deputy Mayor, Clr Pip Friedrich and Clr Michael Randall are seeking re-election as Councillors for the new Council term in 2024.

Carolyn is also excited to endorse the nomination of Ann Marie Kimber as Serving Mosman’s 2024 Mayoral candidate, who she hopes to similarly mentor and support in a capacity as a few Councillor in the new Council term.

Serving Mosman has a solid tradition of seeking out and promoting strong community advocates, thereby encouraging new voices and civic representation.

Our 2024 team is a wonderful mix of experience and freshness. We remain steadfastly committed to serving you based on our foundational principles – service, accountability, consultation and courtesy.
