Access at Balmoral Beach

Universally accessible infrastructure = this beach is for everyone.

Balmoral Beach is the place people want to be - to promenade, to contemplate, to gather with friends and to swim. With valuable accessible infrastructure already at Balmoral - toilets and showers, water stations, picnic tables and handrails into Balmoral Baths there is a gap in access to the water for people using a wheelchair.

In the past, the best answer to beach access was to build fixed ramps. Fixed ramps need regular cleaning and the sand drift caused by tides and storms can play havoc with the sand/ramp interface.

Accessible beach infrastructure now commonly includes beach matting that is rolled out from a fixed path to the water’s edge. Beach matting can be rolled out when needed and rolled back up to be stored nearby until it is needed again.

Aspiring to a universally accessible Balmoral Beach is more than planning infrastructure. It is about a firm commitment to removing barriers to inclusion.
